I overheard a conversation the other day whilst i was at a wedding. 3 young girls were talking about the gym and one of them had been talking about her latest struggles with weight loss. Stuff I come across with clients and can understand also
…there are many ways!
After a few moments, an elder lady had chimed in. An ‘aunty’ if you will, and proceeded to scold one of the young girls (I kid you not)
….Girls dont need to go to the gym have some shame. Just do fasting and stop eating so much and complaining
Dang this made me angry. But my mother taught me to never interrupt when elders are speaking. Every fibre of my being wanted to just jump in and kindly correct the ‘aunty’ . But I Left it at that.
This isn’t the first time I have come across this. Our culture is still quite, dare I say, backwards at times. Especially when it comes to health and fitness. Some of the nonsense I hear out there genuinely puzzles me. And its insane because we live in a day and age where the internet has made the world smaller and we have so much information at our disposal
Look I may be in the minority here, but we MUST educate and speak up against those who still believe exercising in a gym is bad, or intermittent fasting is the only way to lose weight, or the solution is simply to shut our gob and stop eating so much.
I mean I even came across a few Instagram pages where some older female personal trainers, yes, qualified, personal trainers with accreditations, were sharing a supposed weight loss drink made with water, chia seeds and fennel seeds. My, god.
Anyway, back to the main point.
My own personal opinion is one that some of my own family members don’t even share. Ive tried to educate them, explain more on the topic of weight loss, but it all falls on deaf ears. South-Asian parents and grandparents still believe that exercise isn’t essential and worse yet, I even came across someone who said a woman’s job isn’t to exercise, but to have kids and serve her husband. Anyway, thats a story for another day….
We really do have to speak up now. Otherwise I fear this outdated knowledge and way of thinking will be passed down to current generations and future generations.
Anyway just wanted to share this very short piece.
